I attended the Texas Municipal League Midyear Conference on March 5–6 in Sugar Land and found the agenda especially relevant to the work facing cities like ours. The conference focused on leadership during uncertain times, the resilience of the Texas economy, demographic trends, water policy, long-term disaster recovery, practical applications of artificial intelligence in local government, the history of state and local relations, and a legislative briefing on issues expected to shape the 2027 session.
Overall, the conference reinforced several key themes that are directly applicable to municipal service: the importance of strong and steady leadership, the need to plan for growth using reliable demographic and economic data, the urgency of addressing water and infrastructure challenges, the reality that recovery from disasters extends far beyond the initial headlines, and the value of using technology responsibly to improve local government operations. It also served as an important reminder that cities must remain engaged and informed on legislative matters that affect local authority and governance.
As a result, I came away with a broader perspective on the policy, infrastructure, and governance issues that will continue to affect Texas cities, and I believe the information shared at this conference will be helpful as we continue discussions about planning, resilience, and responsible service to our community.
